Overview of VA Aid and Attendance Benefits
Eligibility Requirements:
Military Service: The veteran must have served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a wartime period.
Medical Need: The applicant must require assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting, or protection from hazards in their daily environment.
Financial Criteria: There are income and asset limits. The applicant’s income must be below a certain threshold, and their net worth must be within VA guidelines, considering factors like unreimbursed medical expenses.
Age and Disability: Veterans aged 65 or older or those who are permanently and totally disabled may qualify.
Benefits Provided:
Additional monthly payment added to the regular VA pension for qualified individuals.
The amount varies based on the applicant’s income and marital status.
How to Apply for VA Aid and Attendance Benefits
Gather Required Documentation:
Military Service Records: DD-214 or other discharge papers.
Medical Evidence: Physician's statement detailing the need for aid and attendance.
Financial Information: Documentation of income, assets, and unreimbursed medical expenses.
Marriage Certificate: If applicable, for surviving spouses.
Complete the Necessary Forms:
VA Form 21-2680: Examination for Housebound Status or Permanent Need for Regular Aid and Attendance.
VA Form 21P-527EZ: Application for Pension.
VA Form 21-0779: Request for Nursing Home Information in Connection with Claim for Aid and Attendance (if applicable).
